Lima to Santiago: Prologue

A few weeks ago, during what had been so far a generally speaking miserable British summer, something unexpected happened: the sun came out. As the warmth bathed the flowering hedgerows and on the cricket pitches willow hit leather, I was sorry that I’d made plans to leave the northern hemisphere for nearly all of July to journey to a place where it would be the depths of winter. There was so much that I was going to miss: the sweet taste of the first ripe tomatoes, England winning the Euros, lying in a meadow reading with my shoes off while butterflies and bumblebees dance across the wildflowers.

And then it started to rain again and I felt better.

This series of blogs will cover the three weeks that I will be spending travelling through South America in July, covering Peru, Bolivia and Chile. If that sounds rather daring and exciting, I will temper it by disclosing that I will be joining a small group tour (with the purple company, for those in the know.) I plan to write these posts as I go along and post them on delay because, well, I haven’t gotten my act together enough to post them ‘live’.

As the only thing more boring than looking at somebody else’s holiday photos is hearing very long stories about said photographs, I hope that against the odds, anybody who stumbles across this blog enjoys it.

¡Vamos!
